帕尔默文化语言学视角下林语堂《浮生六记》英译本的意象文化传递研究

内容摘要

美国语言人类学家加利·帕尔默于1996年出版了其专著《文化语言学理论构建》,书中将认知语言学与语言人类学相结合,提出了文化语言学作为语言研究的新途径。文化语言学就其根本而言,是关于意象的理论,其核心概念是意象。所谓意象,既包括我们脑海中显现出来的各种图像,也包括我们通过听觉、味觉、嗅觉、触觉和动觉所获得的经验(帕尔默,1999：5)。该理论试图通过各种相关意象来研究人们是如何使用并理解语言的,并认为语言是语言符号基于意象的排列,而意象实际上又是由文化决定的。意象、语言、文化及三者之间的关系构成了文化语言学的核心。《浮生六记》系清代学者沈复的自传体小说,书中充满了丰富的文化意象,这些意象反映了江南的文化特征,流露出了沈复的内心情感。林语堂素爱此书,故将其译成英文,以期传播中国之文化。林先生的译本不仅将沈复原文的含义译出,而且通过字、词、句的反复锤炼,将文中意象的“中国味”传递给了西方读者。此译本体现了林先生较高的翻译造诣,深受中西方读者的喜爱,也成为众多学者从各个视角进行翻译研究的样本。本文以林语堂所译的《浮生六记》中的文化意象为分析语料,以帕尔默的文化语言学为理论框架,用定性的个案分析方法辅以一定的定量阐释,剖析了该译本中反映江南文化特征和沈复内心情感世界的意象,通过解读林先生在翻译过程中处理这些意象的文化传递的方法和策略,探索了帕尔默的文化语言学应用于意象翻译的指导意义。通过本文的研究,作者发现,根据意象中“象”的传递类型,林先生在处理《浮生六记》中关于中国文化意象词语的英译策略可按照传承、变形、失落和扩增进行归类。研究还表明,在意象的意义传递过程中,该译本更倾向于保留源语意象。对于包含丰富文化信息的文化特有意象,林先生选择将其进行变形、失落和扩增处理,以便更好地传达文化信息。此项研究使我们得到一些关于文化意象翻译的启示：文化共享和文化特有意象均具可译性；在文化意象传递的翻译中,移情和文化移植有助于意象在不同文化间的更好传递。作者希望通过对《浮生六记》林语堂译本的分析,对研究帕尔默文化语言学应用于意象的传递翻译研究有所裨益。
