唐诗中数词英译的模糊对等

数词是表示数目的文字或符号,通常被认为是最精确的语言。一直以来,数词的翻译都被简单地视为用译文中对应的数词来替换原文的数词。但是,作为人类认识世界的工具,数词与人类生活有着密切的联系,它印记着人类文明进步的足迹,从而具有丰富的文化内涵。在实际应用中,除了准确的计数功能外,数词具有强大的修辞功能,常常用来抒情达意,增强语势。这种泛化的虚数,就是数词的语义模糊现象(包惠南,2001)。数词也受到了许多诗人的青睐。唐诗中的数词常常具有模糊语义和想象色彩,它们不仅仅是简单地表示数量的方法,而且也是表现夸张、对比等美感的修辞手段。这种模糊性使得其在诗歌中的翻译不再像看上去那么容易。模糊性是语言的基本属性。美国教授扎德提出的模糊语言理论在语言学界引起了广泛的关注,它为语言科学的研究以及翻译理论的研究和实践提供了新的思路。数词是语言科学中的一个特殊领域,模糊语言的理论也为数词及其翻译研究开辟了新的途径。本研究在考察大量文献之后发现,目前对模糊语言的研究以及唐诗翻译的研究都已经取得了丰硕的成果,但对于唐诗中数词的模糊性及其英译研究相对较少,且欠全面。因此,本研究以唐诗中的数词为研究对象,以许渊冲教授及其他译者英译唐诗为材料,统计了许渊冲教授编译的《唐诗三百首》中一至十以及百、千、万这十三个基本数词的出现频率,借助模糊语言学关于模糊性以及模糊语言的界定考察了这些数词的模糊频率,对这些模糊语义的数词进行了全面的分析和分类,并探讨了造成其模糊性的原因。然后,在考察了大量含有数词的唐诗的译文的基础上,论证了唐诗中数词英译模糊对等的可行性,并提出一些实现这种模糊对等的翻译策略。作者期望通过上述研究,本论文能对唐诗英译和模糊语言研究提供些微的补充。具体来讲,本研究的结论如下:首先,通过统计发现,唐诗中数词的出现频率很高,而且大多数的数词具有模糊语义,这使得其翻译不再是简单地用译文中对应的数词来替换原文中的数词。其次,唐诗中的数词按照其在诗歌中的具体表现和功能可大致分为以下五类:用以表示不确定的数量、范围、距离以及时间的数词;用作夸张、对比、比喻等修辞的数词;用以获取美学效果的数词;出自典故的数词以及用作概括的数词。第三,造成唐诗中数词模糊性的因素有文化因素、数词本身语义的不确定性、固定的数词结构、几个数词连用以及模糊限制词的影响。第四,通过对英汉数词的大致比较得出,英汉数词在构词能力、语用意义和文化内涵方面均存在较大差异,因此,在唐诗翻译中,很多情况下,数词难以达到完全的、绝对的对等。第五,基于模糊理论和翻译对等理论,以几首包含数词的唐诗的英译版为例,论证了唐诗中数词英译的模糊对等的可行性。最后,通过分析大量含数词的唐诗的英译实例,基于包惠南(2001)关于数词翻译应遵循的民族性、通俗性和形象性的原则,本研究提供了以下可达到数词英译模糊对等的具体翻译策略:以精确译精确;以模糊译模糊;以精确译模糊。
