内容摘要

本文的研究对象是林纾和庞德的翻译对比。作为译者,林、庞不懂外语,译介时却凭藉各自高妙的文学造诣,寻求与原作者的神合,追求思想感情、意象、氛围而非语言形式上的对等,溶入较多的创作性成分。其译笔文字优美,匠心独运,神韵丰厚,影响深远,成为中外翻译史上十分独特的现象。中西方传统翻译研究以排除误译的规定性方法为主流,起于语言学又止于语言学。长期以来,在“源语中心论”和极端科学主义的影响下,“忠实”、“对等”这些标准一直占据着翻译文本的中心位置,成为传统译学研究的金科玉律。以传统翻译观标准审视林、庞译作,会发现增、删、误、漏比比皆是,那些创造性的组合与并置,以及对意象和氛围的忠实(而非忠实于原文文字)而导致误译连连。对林、庞翻译的主流评论自相矛盾。一方面,对林、庞译作优美的译笔及深远的影响高度评价;另一方面,对二人由于不懂外语而造成的对原文的不忠实横加指责。毋庸讳言,这些评论有其合理之处,其中不乏真知灼见。然而翻译并非简单的文字转换过程,前人的研究仅从语言学层面展开,概莫出于指令性模式巢窠,结论难免失之偏颇。二十世纪七十年代,西方翻译研究出现了“文化转向”,形成了以译入语文化为研究重点的流派。如多元系统理论、操纵理论、哲学阐
