从功能翻译理论看英语方言的汉译-以《苔丝》的两个汉译本为例

内容摘要

方言翻译一直以来都是中英文学翻译中的一大难点,英语方言汉译的方法也是不尽相同。本文在德国功能翻译理论的框架下,通过对《德伯家的苔丝》两个汉译本的研究来探讨英语方言的汉译,为方言翻译领域贡献绵薄之力。《德伯家的苔丝》是著名文学大师托马斯·哈代的经典著作之一,此书成功塑造了众多生动鲜活的人物形象,用英语方言反映人物的出生背景,受教育程度和社会地位,将语言与文化完美的融合在剧情之中,使之成为文学史上的巨著,但也正是这种语言与文化的巧妙融合赋予了译者前所未有的挑战。摆脱了对等翻译理论的束缚,德国功能翻译理论将翻译扩展到翻译行为。在功能翻译理论之前,作为传统翻译理论的起点,原文是衡量译文质量的唯一标尺,然而功能翻译理论推翻了其原文标尺作用的标准,将翻译的目的和忠诚原则作为衡量译文的主要标准。功能翻译派认为,翻译皆有一定的目的,译文是否忠实于和如何忠实于原文,取决于翻译的目的。本文将功能翻译理论应用于《德伯家的苔丝》中的方言翻译,对张谷若和孙致礼两个著名的汉译本进行个案分析研究。通过对两个译本的参与者以及各自的翻译要求和目的的分析,得出虽然他们选择的翻译策略不尽相同,但是他们的译本都不失为佳作。张谷若先生的方言对译策略和孙致礼先生的通俗语译法策略,都不失为方言翻译的可行策略,但是它们又都不是完美的翻译方法,本文尝试性地进一步提出在方言翻译方面的一些拙见,希望对以后的研究能有一定的借鉴作用。
