《嘉莉妹妹》与《废都》中“荒原”意识之比较研究

内容摘要


在西方,“荒原精神”的演变经历了一个长期的历史过程,直到T.S.艾略特的《荒原》发表之后,“荒原”意识才作为一个专门的文学术语被广泛关注。在现代中西方文学领域,有不少作品都以此为主题,书写了现代人精神的颓废、迷茫和无可逃遁,二十世纪美国著名小说家西奥多·德莱赛的小说《嘉莉妹妹》和中国当代著名作家贾平凹的《废都》都表达了“荒原”意识这一主题。虽然《嘉莉妹妹》与《废都》产生于不同的年代和国度,但二者却有着相同的题材,相似的历史语境和共同的主题。本文运用比较文学平行研究的方法对这两部小说进行了比较研究,从历史语境、主人公以及象征性符号这三个方面分析了两部作品中的“荒原”意识。通过比较发现,在中西社会大转型的“荒原”背景之上,具有历时性和共时性特征的嘉莉妹妹和庄之蝶,一个不断追求梦想却最终失败,一个多次灵魂自救却依然走不出精神困境,具有符号意义的“摇椅”和“牛”、“埙声”也象征着颓废、迷惘和没有出路的结局。由此可见,这两部小说以不同的故事和方式,表达了人类社会共同的“荒原”意识,进而得出,在人类社会发展过程中,经济越是发达、物质越是丰富,人们对精神的渴求就愈加强烈,不管是什么阶级、什么文化、什么社会制度,都有可能面临同样的精神危机,这一现象发出了文学的终极追问,值得人们深思和反省。
