走向跨文化人格：林语堂文化身份的动态建构

内容摘要

“两脚踏东西文化,一心评宇宙文章”的林语堂是“20世纪的智慧人物”,被誉为集东西方智慧于一身的“文化大使”和“真正的世界公民”,是跨文化人格的典型个案。本论文的研究目的是要探讨林语堂的文化身份动态构建过程及其文化身份构建的方向是跨文化人格。本文根据Lustig和Koester的文化身份发展三阶段模块将林语堂的文化身份动态构建过程分为三个阶段:未审视的文化身份阶段、文化身份探索阶段以及文化身份完成阶段。在第一阶段,林语堂受大山、家庭以及教会学校影响颇深。虽然未与中国文化完全隔绝,但他对西方文化特别是基督教文化有着极大地认同,并且对自己的基督徒身份所隐含的意义并不知晓。在第二阶段,林语堂的文化身份经历了几次转化。本文运用Kim的跨文化适应理论中文化涵化(acculturation)、去文化化(deculturation)等术语以及压力—适应—成长动态模型(stress-adaptation-growth dynamic),力图在展现林语堂的社会实践活动以及相关文化思想的基础上阐释其跨文化人格的动态建构过程。第三阶段是林语堂民族身份和跨文化人格的形成阶段。在这一阶段,他在对待本民族文化和他民族文化的倾向上呈现出两大特征:普适化和个体化。这两大特征使他超越了东西文化的二元对立,提出了构建世界文化的设想。
