论林纾的文化误译在中国文学近代转型中的无意识贡献

内容摘要

“忠实”原则曾一度被视为判断文章翻译好坏的唯一标准,但随着译者主体性的深入研究,文学翻译研究已不再局限在传统的对等理论,而是将许多文本外的因素也纳入研究范围。这样,文学翻译的重要特征之一—文化误译,得到了前所未有的重视和更加合理的解释,而不是以前的一味否定。林纾是晚清时期一位颇具争议的翻译家。传统对等理论的翻译批评者认为他翻译的作品称不上翻译,因为他的翻译在内容和结构上不忠实于原作。尽管林纾的翻译中有这样那样的误译,他的作品在当时还是受到了极大的欢迎,产生了极大的社会影响。因此,林纾的误译,尤其是区分于纯技术性误译的文化误译值得我们研究,也是本文的研究对象。人类文化学对文化的分层为本文提供了林纾文化误译分类的理论框架。本文致力于用实例具体分析意识形态,诗学,价值观和宗教等方面的因素是如何作用于林纾,从而引起林纾的文化误译。作者通过丰富的个例研究发现,许多文本外的因素,如晚清时期的社会文化背景,当时读者的期待以及林纾的翻译目的和写作习惯等,都极大程度地影响译者翻译策略的选择。林纾的文化误译不但没有埋葬他的翻译作品,反而对中国文学做出了极大的贡献,由于受当时时代和林纾本人的局限,林纾的这一贡献是无意识的。
